Stomatin-like protein 2 (STOML2) is a member of the stomatin superfamily and is a widely expressed mitochondrial inner membrane protein. It acts as an oncogenic-related protein and is found to be up-regulated in multi-cancers. STOML2 has a role and clinical significance in gastric adenocarcinoma and gallbladder cancer (GBC). Increased expression of STOML2 may lead to unfavorable prognosis for gastric adenocarcinoma patients. STOML2 may play an important role in human GBC tumorigenesis and may serve as a novel prognostic marker in human GBC. It interacts with prohibitin-1 and -2 and binds to the mitochondrial membrane phospholipid cardiolipin. The up-regulation of this gene expression increases cardiolipin content, the formation of metabolically active mitochondrial membranes and also induces mitochondrial biogenesis.
