GFAP is specifically found in astroglia. GFAP is a very popular marker for localizing benign astrocyte and neoplastic cells of glial origin in the central nervous system. Antibody to GFAP is useful in differentiating primary gliomas from metastatic lesions in the brain and for documenting astrocytic differentiation in tumors outside the CNS.

Applications
Suitable for use in ELISA, Western Blot, Flow Cytometry, Immunofluorescence and Immunohistochemistry. Other applications not tested.
Recommended Dilution
Western Blot: 0.5-1ug/ml Flow Cytometry: 0.5-1ug/10e6 cells Immunofluorescence: 1-2ug/ml Immunohistochemistry (FFPE): 0.25-0.5ug/ml/30min at RT (Staining of formalin-fixed tissues requires boiling tissue sections in 10mM Citrate Buffer, pH 6.0, for 10-20 min followed by cooling at RT for 20 minutes) Optimal dilutions to be determined by the researcher.
Positive Control
Brain or Astrocytoma
Storage and Stability
May be stored at 4°C for short-term only. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20°C. Aliquots are stable for 12 months after receipt. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap.
Immunogen
GFAP isolated from pig spinal cord (NP_001124491; P14136; P03995; P47819).
Form
Supplied as a liquid in PBS. Also available with BSA and azide, see 138553.
Purity
Purified by Protein G affinity chromatography.
Specificity
Recognizes GFAP at ~50kD. Species Crossreactivity: human, mouse, rat, bovine, porcine, rabbit, chicken. Does not crossreact with other intermediate filament proteins.
