| KChIP1 is an integral member of the Kv channel interacting proteins (KChIP) family, which are components of native A-type Kv channel complexes and are likely to play a major role as modulators of somatodendritic excitability. Kv4 potassium channels regulate action potentials in neurons and cardiac myocytes. Co-expression of KChIP with pore-forming Kv4 alpha subunits causes changes in the gating and amplitude of Kv4 currents. KChIP1 interacts differently with Kv4.1 and Kv4.2 currents and thus increases the functional diversity of K(+) channels. Like other members of the family, KChIP1 have four EF-hand-like domains and bind calcium ions. Report suggests the existence of two splice variants of the protein, KChIP1a and KChIP1b with differential modulatory activity on Kv4 kinectis.
