KChIP1 is an integral member of the Kv channel interacting proteins (KChIP) family, which are components of native A-type Kv channel complexes and are likely to play a major role as modulators of somatodendritic excitability. Kv4 potassium channels regulate action potentials in neurons and cardiac myocytes. Co-expression of KChIP with pore-forming Kv4 alpha subunits causes changes in the gating and amplitude of Kv4 currents. KChIP1 interacts differently with Kv4.1 and Kv4.2 currents and thus increases the functional diversity of K(+) channels. Like other members of the family, KChIP1 have four EF-hand-like domains and bind calcium ions. Report suggests the existence of two splice variants of the protein, KChIP1a and KChIP1b with differential modulatory activity on Kv4 kinectis. Human KChIP1 gene is located at chromosome 5q35.1.
