| An enzymatically inactive member of the phosphoglucomutase gene superfamily, Aciculin is part of the cytoskeletal-extracellular matrix linkage where actin filaments terminate at the plasma membrane. The 60/63kD, microfilament-associated anchoring protein is concentrated in adherens-type junctions of keratinocytes and muscle cells, including smooth muscle dense plaques, cardiomyocyte intercalated discs, striated muscle costameres and myotendinous junctions. It associates with dystrophin and/or utrophin in various tissues and cell types (1). Smooth muscle cell and fibroblast Aciculin localizes to focal adhesions and along stress fibers. Some cell lines and in vivo cell types such as endothelial cells, do not express detectable amounts of Aciculin. |
