| Adenosine receptors, a class of purinergic G-protein coupled receptors with adenosine as endogenous ligands mediate several receptor subtype-specific physiological processes that include cardiac rate, smooth muscle tone, platelet aggregation, inflammation, cell growth and death, and neurotransmission. The activity of A2A adenosine receptor is mediated by G proteins which activate adenylyl cyclase. It is abundant in basal ganglia, vasculature and platelets and it is a major target of caffeine. Adenosine receptor A2A-R contributes to motoneuron survival by transactivating the tyrosine kinase receptor TrkB and may suggest a new strategy for using this mechanism in neurodegenerative diseases. |
