Mouse Affinity Purified E
Serum Amyloid A (SAA) is a low molecular weight acute phase protein of 12-14kD which is produced primarily by the liver in response to IL-1, IL-6, and Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF). During acute events, the rise in the level of SAA in blood exhibits the most intense and rapid increase among all acute phase proteins. SAA reaches a concentration of up to 1mg/ml in the sera of acutely ill patients. This concentration is 100-1000 times the normal physiologic level. SAA has utility in predicting renal allograft rejections and in assessing the inflammatory status of rheumatoid arthritis and trauma patients. Measurement of SAA has potential as a predictor of the onset of opportunistic infections associated with AIDS and for assessing patient biocompatibility during hemodialysis. SAA is more sensitive than C-reactive protein or a1-acid glycoprotein as an indicator of lung inflammation in cystic fibrosis patients.
