Amyloid precursor protein (APP) is a cell surface receptor and transmembrane precursor protein that undergoes extensive proteolytic processing by secretases to promote the neurite growth, neuronal adhesion, axonogenesis and transcriptional activation. In Alzheimer disease, APP protein is broken down and releases the amyloid- beta-peptide that is found in senile plaques and vessels.
