| The human AGT gene product, pre-angiotensinogen, is expressed in the liver and is cleaved by the enzyme renin in response to lowered blood pressure. The resulting product, angiotensin I is then cleaved by angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) to generate the physiologically active enzyme angiotensin II. Human pre-angiotensinogen is encoded by two mRNAs that differ only in the length of the 3'-untranslated region due to postulated use of two polyadenylation sites. There may also be alternative initiation codons (nucleotides 40-42 and 67-69).
