Human A (MW 38kD) endonuclease-1 (HAP-1), also known as APE, APEX or Ref-1, is a nuclear enzyme that repairs apurinic/apyramidinic sites in cellular DNA. Human AP endonucleases-1 cleaves the phosphodiesterase followed by filling-in of the nucleotide gap by DNApolymerase. HAP-1 has been detected in a wide range of human tissues including bladder, breast, small and large intestine, lung, ovary, pancreas, skin, spleen, testis, thymus and thyroid.
