| CARM1 identified as a SRC-2/TIF2/GRIP1-binding protein, belongs to a family of arginine-specific protein methyltransferases, which includes at least seven members. CARM1 has been shown to synergistically stimulate transcription by nuclear receptors in combination with the p160 family of coactivators and forms a ternary complex with p300/CBP and SRC-2/TIF2/GRIP1. Recent studies broadened the targets of the transcriptional coactivator function of CARM1: CARM1 coactivates p53-dependent transcription and cooperates with -catenin to enhance transcriptional activation by the lymphoid enhancer factor/T-cell factor (LEF1/TCF4). The protein is also a novel transcriptional coactivator of NF- B and functions as a promoter-specific regulator of NF- B recruitment to chromatin.
