| Cav1 is a 21kD scaffolding protein which is the main component of the caveolae plasma membranes found in most cell types. Two isoforms (alpha and beta) are encoded by a single transcript from this gene. Cav1 is highly expressed in terminally differentiated or quiescent cells, suggesting a possible role for Cav1 as a negative regulator of cell proliferation. Cav1 has been implicated in the pathogenesis of oncogenic cell transformation, tumorigenesis, and metastasis | | | and functions as a “tumor and/or metastasis-modifying gene”.
