| CD21 is a single-pass type 2 transmembrane protein that serves as the complement receptor for C3d and the Epstein-Barr virus. It is a member of a family of C3b/C4b binding proteins that regulate complement activation, comprise tandemly repeated 60-75 amino acid sequences, and whose genes map to band q32 on chromosome 1 (1). CD21 interacts with the p53 anti-oncoprotein, the p68 calcium binding protein and the nuclear p120 ribonucleoprotein to regulate their functions. Phosphorylation of CD21 inhibits its interaction with the nuclear p120 ribonucleoprotein (2). |
