| Integrins are heterodimeric integral membrane proteins composed of an alpha chain and a beta chain. The I-domain containing alpha integrin 2 combines with beta integrin 1 to form a collagen-binding integrin referred to as glycoprotein Ia/IIa (gpIa/IIa) when expressed on platelets, and very late (activation) antigen 2 ('VLA-2') when found on T-cells. In addition to adhesion, integrins are known to participate in cell-surface mediated signalling. CD49b is expressed approximately 50% of monocytes and most adherent cell lines. | | | CD49b forms a non-covalent association with the 130kD VLA beta chain (CD29) in the VLA-2 complex. The CD49b/CD29 complex is also known as a2/b1 and VLA-2. The complex mediates binding of cells to collagen (types I, II, III, and IV) and to laminin. The complex of CD49b associated with CD29 (integrin b1) is a receptor for laminin and collagen.
