CD105 is a novel 180kD homodimeric Type I integral membrane glycoprotein consisting of a extracellular domain, a hydrophobic transmembrane region and a short cytoplasmic tail. Its sequence consists of highly conserved RGD tripeptide and is expressed highly on endothelial cells, macrophages, fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells. It is a component of TGF-beta receptor complex and plays an important role in cardiovascular development, angiogenesis and vascular remodeling. It functions as an auxiliary protein and binds TGFB1, TGFB3, Activin A, BMP-2 and BMP-7 in the presence of signaling receptors. CD105 also has a regulatory role in actin cytoskeletal reorganization, co-ordinating changes in the sites of focal adhesion and cellular migration. Mutations in CD105 result in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia type I. Expression of CD105 has also been observed in certain cancer types.
