| Claudins are integral membrane proteins involved in the assembly and function of tight junction strands. Claudins have 4 transmembrane domains and 2 extracellular loops and C-terminal tail containing PDZ-binding motifs and YV sequences. Claudin 3, a human homolog of rat RVP1, is a unique member of this family. It is a low-affinity receptor for Clostridium perfringes entertoxin capable of mediating toxin-dependent cytolysis.
