C. botulinum is a large anaerobic bacillus that is widely distributed wherever there is organic material (e.g. soil, sediments of lakes and ponds, decaying vegetation). Seven toxigenic types of the organism exist, producing immunologically distinct forms of botulinum toxin (A, B, C1, D, E, F, and G). A multivalent toxoid (a toxin modified to remove the toxic properties but maintain the ability to stimulate an immune reaction) evokes good protective antibody response.
