C5 is part of the membrane attack complex (MAC) of the complement system. C5 is split into C5a og C5b by the C5 convertases from the classical and the alternative complement pathway and the C5b fragment initiates the assembly of the terminal MAC (C5b-C9) (1). The molecular mass of C5 is 190kD.

ImmunogenC5 isolated from human plasma.
SpecificityRecognizes human C5. Epitope specificity differs from that of clone 11F6 but slightly overlaps as determined by inhibition ELISA. Reacts strongly with C5. No reaction seen from patients deficient in C5, when tested in sandwich ELISA in combination with a polyclonal antibody against C5. In Western Blot after SDS-PAGE, reacts with C5 in normal human plasma (PEG precipitated C5) in nonreduced form only, no reaction from C5 deficient patients.
