| CXCR6 was described as a novel chemokine receptor largely based on its sequence homology to known chemokine receptor molecules. The structure contains a sequence common to chemokine receptors, which mediate their cellular effects through a G protein-coupled mechanism. A receptor known as CXCR6 was originally described for its ability to endow cells expressing it and CD4, but not other known HIV co-receptors, to be infected with both the simian immunodeficiency virus and HIV type I. Use of CXCR6 as a co-receptor for HIV viral entry appears to be determined by the structure of the HIV Env protein. Both M-tropic and T cell tropic HIV strains can infect CXCR6-expressing cells.
