| Cytochrome p450, family 19 subfamily A polypeptide 1a (Cyp19a1a) was previously known as P450aromA and is one of two isoforms of the aromatase gene. It is the terminal enzyme in the steroidogenic pathway that converts androgens into estrogens. Thus, appropriate expression of the enzyme is essential to both reproduction and sex differentiation. Cyp19a1a is found to be expressed in follicular cells in the ovary during vitellogenesis. One study showed inhibition of cyp19a1a aromatase activity but not transcript abundance when exposed to androstatrienediol. Additionally, expression and aromatase activity of cyp19a1a were inhibited when exposed to estradiol.
