| Cytokeratin filaments consist of a complex family of ~20 different cytokeratin polypeptides with relative MW of 40-68kD (1,2). These intracellular intermediate filaments of 10nm in diameter provide structural integrity to epithelial cells. All the filament subunits share a general common fibrillar organization, consisting of a central a-helical rod that is flanked by N- and C-terminal domains at each end (3). Generally, low MW keratins are expressed in the early stages of cell development, whereas high MW keratins are expressed in maturing cells (4,5). Anti-cytokeratin has been used to characterize epithelial origin of adenomatoid tumors (8), to distinguish undifferentiated carcinomas from large cell lymphomas (9), and to discern between undifferentiated carcinoma and malignant melanoma when combined with S-100 antibody |

| (10). Positive staining of keratin proteins in embryonal carcinomas, endodermal sinus tumors, and choriocarcinomas distinguishes these carcinomas from seminomas. |
