| Edg6 is a recently cloned member of the endothelial differentiation gene (EDG) G protein-coupled receptor family. It is a receptor for the lysosphingolipid sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P), which are structurally related lysophospholipid mediators. Binding of SPP to Edg6 activates Erk, leading to the activation of the transcription factor Elk1 and thus the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signal transduction pathway. The protein also acts as a receptor for a lipid-derived ligand. Edg6 plays an essential role in lymphocyte cell signaling. The protein is specifically expressed in fetal and adult lymphoid and hematopoietic tissue as well as in lung.
