Ferritin is the major intracellular iron storage protein in all organisms. It has the shape of a hollow sphere that permits entry of a variable amount of iron for storage as ferric hydroxide phosphate complexes. Mammalian liver and spleen ferritin (relative mass about 450,000) consists of 24 subunits of 2 species, the heavy subunit (relative mass = 21,000) and the light subunit (relative mass = 19,000).

Storage and StabilityMay be stored at 4°C for short-term only. For long-term storage and to avoid repeated freezing and thawing, aliquot Store at -20°C. Aliquots are stable for at least 12 months at -20°C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer.

ImmunogenFerritin [Human Spleen].
SpecificityFerritin has two subunits, heart and liver, that are 21 and 19kD respectively. There are 25 different isoforms of ferritin combining different combinations of the two. Spleen is one of these combinations. The native molecule is 420-450kD, depending on the isoform. On a very long SDS-PAGE gel it is possible to resolve the two subunits; otherwise only a band of ~20kD is seen. There might also be a band around 25kD which is a charge variant. Moreover, a dimer at 40kD can sometimes be seen. Species Crossreactivity: Crossreacts with Human.
