| GLT1 is the major glial glutamate transporter that takes up more than 90% of glutamate from the synapse. GLT1b is a splice variant that contains 11 unique amino acids at the C-terminus that encode a PDZ binding domain. GLT1b was initially believed to be the neuronal isoform of GLT1, but it now appears that GLT1b is localized to astrocytes in the normal brain and to neurons in pathological conditions. In Lou Gehrig's Disease, GLT1a is decreased, while GLT1b is increased.
