| Hematopoietically expressed homeobox (hhex) is so named for its homeobox DNA-binding domain, capable of recognizing the DNA sequence 5'-ATTAA-3', as determined by similarity through the Uniprot database. Hhex works in parallel with the transcription factor gene scl to regulate early endothelial and blood differentiation in zebrafish. While premature and ectopic expression of early endothelial and blood differentiation genes can be shown via the ectopic expression of hhex by injection of a DNA construct, hhex deficiency studies have shown that hhex is not essential to endothelial and blood differentiation. Scl has been shown to compensate for the missing function of hhex, and hhex and scl have been demonstrated to cross-regulate each other's expression. Hhex is also suggested to regulate early embryonic patterning.
