Clone Host Grade Applications
Polyclonal Rabbit Purified E IC
Homocysteine a sulfur containing amino acid, is formed by the transmethylation of methionine, an essential amino acid. Homocysteine may be irreversibly metabolized to cystathionine by cystathionine synthetase. This reaction uses pyridoxal phosphate (Vitamin B6) as a co-enzyme. The enzyme cystathionine synthetase is deficient in homocysteinuria, a rare genetic disease associated with high blood levels of homocysteine and the development of premature atherosclerosis. This and the association of other rare enzyme deficiencies with homocysteinemia and premature atherosclerosis led McCully to formulate the homocysteine hypothesis of atherosclerosis (McCully, K.S., The homocysteine theory of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis 20: 23-27 (1976)).

Clone TypePolyclonal
FormSupplied as a liquid in PBS, pH 7.2. No preservative added.
PurityAntiserum previously preabsobed on protein carriers, and purified
ImmunogenA synthetic peptide conjugated Homocysteine to protein carrier (Pc).
SpecificityRecognizes protein-conjugated homocysteine. Exhibits very low affinity towards free homocysteine.
Using a conjugated Homocysteine-Glutaraldehyde-Protein carrier, specificity was performed with an ELISA test by competition experiments with the following compounds
