IgA has a higher turnover rate (66mg/kg body weight/day) than all other immunoglobulins combined. In secretions the majority of IgA (S-IgA) exists as a dimer (2x150kD units) linked together by J-chain (MW. 16kD) and protected from a proteolytic digestion by secretory component (70kD). Unlike serum, where IgA1is the dominant subclass, in secretions the proportion of IgA1 and IgA2 varies (IgA2 has increased resistance to proteolytic degradation). Free secretory component is also found in varying concentrations in body fluids, as is secretory IgM, which is similar to the serum form, but has secretory component attached. S-IgA forms a first line of protection on mucosal surfaces where it inhibits uptake of antigen and interferes with microorganism adherence to the mucosal epithelium. Cells such as macrophages, neutrophils, hepatocytes and natural killers have surface receptors for IgA.

Storage and Stability	Lyophilized powder may be stored at -20°C. Stable for 12 months at -20°C. Reconstitute with sterile ddH2O. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20°C. Reconstituted product is stable for 12 months at -20°C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer. Labeled with horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Sodium azide is a potent inhibitor of peroxidase and should not be added to HRP conjugates. HRP conjugates are sensitive to light.
