The integrins are a family of cell-surface adhesion molecules that mediate cell-cell and cell-matrix protein interactions. Integrins are non-covalently linked heterodimers of alpha (a) and beta (b) subunits. Multiple a and b subunits have been identified that can associate to form different integrin receptor dimers. Each integrin has a specific ligand-binding repertoire and a unique biological function. The Integrin b1 subunit is also known as CD29 or VLA-b.
