| ITGB1 encodes the protein beta subunit. Integrins are heterodimers of two transmembrane chains, a and b. The b1 subunit is widely expressed and heterodimerize with at least 12 different subunits, generating integrins with differing ligand specificities. Integrins containing the b1 subunit regulate epidermal stem cell maintenance. Six alternatively spliced variants have been found for ITGB1 which encodes five proteins with alternate carboxy termini, Beta-1A, Beta-1B, Beta-1C, Beta-1C-2 and Beta-1D. Isoform beta-1A is widely expressed. Isoform beta-1B is expressed in skin, liver and skeletal muscle. Isoform beta-1C and isoform beta-1C-2 are expressed in muscle, kidney, liver and placenta. Isoform beta-1D is expressed specifically in striated muscle (skeletal and cardiac muscle).
