| Integrins are heterodimeric cell surface receptors composed of alpha and beta subunits, which mediate cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix attachments. AlphaIIbeta3 and alphaVbeta3 are the two beta3 containing integrins, which are prominently expressed in hematopoitic cells and angiogenic endothelic cells and perform adhesive functions in hemostasis, wound healing and angiogenesis. Integrin b3 localizes in the 17q21.32 region of chromosome. Alternate splicing of integrin b3 produces three isoforms, Beta-3A, Beta-3B and Beta-3C. Isoform beta-3A is specifically expressed in osteoblast cells and isoform beta-3C is specifically expressed in prostate and testis.
