IL-13 is an immunoregulatory cytokine produced mainly by T helper 2 cells, but also by mast cells and NK cells. IL-13 is a unique cytokine having structural features and functional characteristics with IL-4. However, it only shares about 30% homology with the IL-4 sequence. IL-13 inhibits IL-1 beta, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-alpha resulting in anti-in ammatory effects on monocytes and macrophages. It also induces B cells to proliferate and isotype-switch to the production of IgE. In addition, IL-13 modulates TH2 cell development interfering key roles in the ostracizing of gastrointestinal parasites and in the evolvement of asthma and allergy. Recombinant Rat IL-13 is an 11.9kD protein containing 109 amino acid residues.

Biological Activity The ED50 as determined by the dose-dependent stimulation of the proliferation of human TF-1 cells is < 40ng/ml, corresponding to a speci c activity of 2.5x10e4 units/mg.
Reconstitution We recommend a quick spin followed by reconstitution in water to a concentration of 0.1-1mg/ml. This solution can then be diluted into other aqueous buffers and stored at 4°C for 1 week or -20°C for future use.
Storage and StabilityLyophilized powder may be stored at 4°C for short-term only. Reconstitute to nominal volume by adding sterile 40-50% glycerol and store at -20°C. Reconstituted product is stable for 12 months at -20°C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer.
