MAP1LC3C is a novel 147aa intracytoplasmic membrane protein belonging to the MAP1 LC3 family. MAP1LC3C is 1 of 3 orthologs of the yeast autophagosome protein ATG8. The precursor molecule is cleaved by APG4B/ATG4B to form the cytosolic form LC3-I. This is activated by APG7L/ATG7, transferred to ATG3 and conjugated to phospholipid to form the membrane-bound form LC3-II. Three different light chains, LC1, LC2 and LC3, can associate with MAP1A and MAP1B proteins. LC3-II binds to the autophagic membranes. Though the exact function of APG8C is not known but reports suggest that it may be involved in formation of autophagosomal vacuoles (autophagosomes). It is most abundantly expressed in placenta, lung and ovary.
