| Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) are proteolytic enzymes capable of degrading connective tissue components. Imbalanced secretion of certain MMP or disturbances in the differential control of MMP by tissue inhibitor of MMPs (TIMPs), implicated the invasive potential of malignant tumors. The matrix metalloproteinase, matrilysin / MMP-7 / PUMP-1, is thought to play an important role in the early steps of tumor progression.
