| Matrix Metalloproteinase 11a, a member of the matrix metalloproteinase family, demonstrates wide substrate specificity with the ability to degrade proteoglycan, fibronectin, laminin, casein, and the non-helical region of collagen. The MMP-11 gene was originally identified on the basis that it is expressed specifically in stromal cells surrounding invasive breast carcinomas. MMP-11 is a unique MMP because it is not secreted as a zymogen but is processed by furin within the constitutive secretory pathway. Compared with other MMPs, MMP-11 shows a different molecular structure, different activity, different gene organization and regulation.
