| Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) belong to a family of proteases that are essential for the breakdown of extracellular matrix. Thus they play an important role in apoptosis, and tumor cell growth, invasion, and metastasis, as well as in angiogenesis and wound healing. All MMPs contain a common domain structure, which include a signal sequence, a propeptide, a catalytic domain and a hemopexin-like (Hpx) domain. MMP-24 (MT5-MMP), the fifth cloned MT- MMP, is expressed in few tissues including testes, liver, lung and kidney; however, it is predominately found in the nervous system. MMP-24 expression is ubiquitously expressed during neural development; while in the adult CNS, it is restricted to specific regions, some of which are known to be neurogenic, such as the hippocampus.
