MEIS1, also known as Homeobox protein Meis1, is a nuclear protein belonging to the TALE/MEIS homeobox family with a homeobox DNA-binding domain. It acts as a transcriptional regulator of PAX6 (Paired box protein Pax-6). It is a protein required for hematopoiesis, megakaryocyte lineage development and vascular patterning. Expression is seen at low levels in normal immunohepatopoietic tissues, and in a subset of myeloid leukemia cell lines, with the highest expression seen in those with a megakaryocytic-erythroid phenotype. It is also expressed at high levels in the cerebellum.
