| Myelin sheaths, comprised of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells, are critical to action potential propagation in the axon of a neuron. Myelin basic protein (MBP) (~18.5kD) is one of the most abundant membrane proteins in the central nervous system. Through interaction with proteolipid protein (PLP), protein zero (P0) and other membrane- associated proteins, MBP is responsible for the compaction and stability of the myelin sheath layers. Demyelination of axons occurs in autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and usually results in impairment of motor and sensory functions. MBP is studied to be a major focus in MS progression. Current research finds that MBP undergoes deimination that converts arginines to citrullines, ultimately causing synergistic neurodegeneration in chronic MS patients. MBP, along with PLP and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG), is also widely used as an immunodominant epitope to induce experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model for MS. | | | Catalog # | M9758-01S | | Applications | Suitable for use in ELISA, Western Blot and Immunohistochemistry.
