| This transmembrane proteolipid protein is the predominant myelin protein present in the central nervous system. It may play a role in the compaction, stabilization, and maintenance of myelin sheaths, as well as in oligodendrocyte development and axonal survival. Mutations in this gene cause X-linked Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease and spastic paraplegia type 2. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms or having different 5' UTRs, have been identified. |

| Recommended Dilution | Western Blot: Can aggregate causing HMW bands to sometimes appear in certain preparations. |
| Immunocytochemistry: 4% PFA fixed cells for 5-10 minutes at RT. Use 0.1% triton in block only to allow antibody access to C-terminal epitope. |
| Immunohistochemistry (Frozen): Fresh frozen sections or 4% PFA fixed, frozen tissues. Epitope is internal, use 0.1-0.2% triton X-100 in the blocking step for permeabilization. |
| Immunohistochemistry (Paraffin): Works best with lightly fixed tissues, or Bouin's fixed material, although there are reports of traditional formalin fixation also working with antigen recovery. |
