| Neurofilaments can be defined as the intermediate or 10nm filaments found in specifically in neuronal cells. In the electron microscope neurofilaments appear as 10nm diameter fibres of indeterminate length which generally have fine wispy protrusions from their sides. They are found particularly abundantly in axons of large projection neurons. They probably function to provide structural support for neurons and their synapses and to support the large axon diameters required for rapid conduction of impulses down axons. They are composed a mixture of subunits which usually include the three neurofilament triplet proteins known as NFL, NFM and NFH. Neurofilaments may also include smaller amounts of peripherin, alpha internexin, nestin and in some cases vimentin. Antibodies to the various neurofilament subunits are very useful cell type markers since the proteins are among the most abundant of the nervous system, are expressed only in neurons and are biochemically very stable. | | | Catalog # | N2160-14F | | Applications | Suitable for use in Immunoblot and Immunohistochemistry (frozen and paraffin-embedded tissue; no proteolytic treatment required). | | Recommended Dilution | Immunohistochemistry: 1:10; Incubation Time 1 hr at room temperature. | | Storage and Stability | May be stored at 4°C for short-term only. For long-term storage and to avoid repeated freezing and thawing, aliquot and add glycerol (40-50%). Store at -20°C or colder. Aliquots are stable for at least 12 months at -20°C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer. | | CAS Number | n/a | | Clone Type | Monoclonal | | Isotype | IgM | | Clone No | 5F273 | | Host | Mouse | | Source | Bovine | | Concentration | Not determined | | Form | Supplied as a liquid. | | Purity | Culture supernatant | | Immunogen | Neurofilament preparation isolated from calf brain tissue. | | Specificity | Marker for the differentiation of 200kD neurofilament peptide from other intermediate filament proteins. The antibody is useful for studying neurofilament expression and for tumor characterization (pheochromocytoma, paraganglioma, ganglioneuroblastoma, ganglioneuroma and other tumors of neuronal origin). Species Crossreactivity: Human, bovine, rat, guinea pig. | | | Important Note | This product as supplied is intended for research use only, not for use in human, therapeutic or diagnostic applications without the expressed written authorization of United States Biological. |
