| NK2 transcription factor related 2 alpha (Nkx-2.2a) is a member of the NK-2 family of homeobox genes. Expression of nkx-2.2a in zebrafish is spatially regulated by sonic hedgehog (shh). Nkx-2.2a is expressed along a continuous narrow band of cells delineating the boundary where two of the earliest nuclei in the brain differentiate. Nkx-2.2a is also involved in the development of the pancreas; the function of nkx-2.2a in pancreatic development is conserved through mammal and zebrafish lineages.
