| Mouse osteopontin is an extracellular matrix protein with a cell-binding domain. It was originally identified as a major component of the noncollagenous organic bone matrix. However, it has subsequently been demonstrated in a wide range of normal adult tissue and body fluids. It is a multifunctional protein involved inbone mineralisation, cell adhesion, cell migration, chronic inflammatory disease and transformation. It acts as a cytokine involved in enhancing production of interferon-gamma and interleukin-12 and reducing production of interleukin-10 and is essential in the pathway that leads to type I immunity.
