| PAI-1 is a 45kD serine protease inhibitor which is the principle inhibitor of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and urokinase (uPA). Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 is also known as Serpine1, and due to its inhibitor function of tPA and uPA, is an inhibitor of fibrinolysis. PAI-1 is present at increased levels in various disease states, and has been linked to an increased occurrence of thrombosis in obesity and the metabolic syndrome.
