Reproductive homeobox on X chromosome 5 also known as Homeobox protein Rhox5 or Homeobox protein Pem is a recently identified nuclear protein product of 12 X-linked novel homeobox gene family that play an important role during postnatal testis development. The members of this family are characterized by a conserved 60aa homeobox DNA-binding domain. Rhox 5 is a possible transcription factor which is developmentally regulated and plays an important role in various developmental processes, DNA-dependent transcriptional regulation and also in understanding the development and physiology of the human reproductive system. It is expressed in a stage specific manner during murine ontogeny but not detectably expressed in adult tissues.
