The Rhox-13 protein is a reproductive homeobox protein found on the X chromosome. This transcription factor belongs to the homeobox gene family whose expression organizes programs of development. Reproductive homeobox genes regulate development of reproductive tissues including the testis, ovary, and placenta. Most of the Rhox genes are expressed in Sertoli cells, the nurse cells in direct contact with developing male germ cells. This suggests that they regulate the expression of somatic-cell gene products critical for germ cell development. Transcripts of this protein are found in the testis and ovary as early as 13.5Dys post coitum. Transcription ceases in the ovary threeDys post partum, but continues in the testis through adulthood.
