| Smad proteins, the mammalian homologs of the Drosophila Mothers against dpp (Mad), are downstream effectors of TGFb/BMP signaling. Smad1 (MADR1) mediates signals of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) in the cell. BMPs constitute a large family of signaling molecules that regulate a wide range of critical processes including morphogenesis, cell-fate determination, proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. BMP receptors are members of the TGFb family of | | | Ser/Thr kinase receptors. Ligand binding induces multimerization, autophosphorylation and activation of these receptors. Subsequently, they phosphorylate Smad1 at serine 463 and 465 in the carboxyl-terminal motif SSXS, as well as Smad5 and Smad8 at their corresponding sites. These phosphorylated Smads dimerize with the collaborating Smad4 (DPC4) and are translocated into the nucleus, where the transcription of target genes is stimulated. | | | Catalog # | S1014-51H | | Applications | Suitable for use in Western Blot.
