| Superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme is a metalloprotein converting the superoxide anion to oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. It is involved in protecting the cells from superoxide radicals generated during aerobic metabolism. All cells have one cytoplamic and one mitochondrial SOD. The cytoplasmic SOD (SOD1) is made up of two identical subunits which individually carry one Zn and one Cu atoms. Cu acts as the receiver of free radical.
