Thrombospondin-1 is a 450kD trimeric glycoprotein first described in 1971. The molecule is stored in high concentrations in the alpha granules of platelets, constitutes 25% of platelet-secreted protein, and participates in platelet aggregation and clot formation. It is one of a class of adhesive glycoproteins that mediate cell-to-cell and cell-to-matrix interactions. Numerous biological activities have been ascribed to TSP-1, including effects on cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, and angiogenesis. It also plays both complex and controversial role in tumor progression.
