| Dimers of alpha and beta tubulin bind to two GTP molecules and assemble into microtubules. The GTP bound to the beta tubulin subunit eventually hydrolyses into GDP. This GTP cycle is essential for microtubule stability, as dimers bound to GTP tend to assemble into microtubules, whereas dimers bound to GDP tend to be unstable. The tubulin beta 3 chain (also known as neuron-specific class III beta-tubulin) are found exclusively in neurons and serves as a neuronal marker.
