| UCP3 is a recently identified candidate mediator of adaptive thermogenesis in humans. It is expressed predominantly in human skeletal muscle and heart and exists as short and long form transcripts, UCP3S and UCP3L. UCP3 is thought to uncouple oxidative phosphorylation, reducing aerobic ATP production and dissipating energy as heat and thus plays an important role in the regulation of human energy expenditure. The protein is also involved in the exit of fatty acids out of the mitochondrial matrix, insulin sensitivity and protection against both reactive oxygen species. The pathological role of the protein has been studied in severe obesity.
