| Cadherins are transmembrane glycoproteins that mediate calcium-dependent cell adhesion. Vascular endothelial cadherin (VE-cadherin) is located strictly at endothelial junctions, where it mediates adhesion between endothelial cells. It functions to maintain adheren junction stability and to suppress apoptosis of endothelial cells by forming a complex with vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) and members of the armadillo family of cytoplasmic proteins (1-3). VE-cadherin links endothelial cells together by homophilic interactions mediated by its extracellular part and associates intracellularly with the actin cytoskeleton via catenins (4).
